A Native American elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner: "Inside of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time." When asked which dog wins he reflected for a moment and replied, "The One I feed the most."
A Mindful Approach To Fitness and Life
The reason most people continue to fall short with their fitness goals is the failure to establish a baseline of current wellness and belief system. If fitness professionals don't know their client's current physical and medical condition, as well as their ultimate goals how can they possibly know how to get them from where they are to where they need to be? The purpose of mindful fitness coaching is to establish a baseline measure of mind and body such as core beleif system, functional capacity, cardiovascular endurance, body composition, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. These are very components of my philosophy and coaching style and establishing a baseline for each component is highly recommended by national health & wellness certifying agencies. By utilizing this information, I am able to develop a holistic program commensurate with the individuals established baseline, giving that person his or her best opportunity for success. By periodically retesting the effectiveness of the program, progress can be evaluated, goals readjusted and the program modified to produce the desired results.
The Exact Blueprint
Making a choice about health and fitness is life transforming only when using the Exact Blueprint. I made a personal commitment to himself that fitness both of the body and mind, nutrition and a good supplementation would be a focal point of my personal life the minute I could no longer take the beating, the humiliation and the bullying I went through for most of my childhood – at one instance at age ten, I was even thrown, by twenty of my classmates, under a big gymnastic mat and everyone was jumping on it until I almost past out, when the teacher thought I had enough, he finally decided to stop them. I immediately started to see a brand new world opening up to me after I identified how I truly felt and committed to become who I really wanted to be.
However, times have changed since then which leads me to think that today's biggest hurdle to building a fit and beautiful body and get in a great shape is the so-called “fitness gurus” that are popping up like mushrooms. I am sure that you’ve been a little more than "suspicious" of those advertisers that sell everything from "instant abs and buns" to "all you can eat diets" as solutions to your fitness goals. Some claims are so wild that it really seems to insult anyone’s intelligence, claiming that you could burn 20 pounds in 6 days. Do they really know how someone who is overweight, overworked and depressed feels like? Many of my clients do. They know that it’s not only the body but the mind and the spirit that allows us to take steps and make a meaningful behavioral change. I have spoken against the many claims to change people’s lives through some ridiculous programs and I always thought that they sound out rightly “dangerous” and that it is even illegal in some countries.
America is a land of opportunities not a land of fools. Unfortunately many out there still fall into the trap and only discover too late that their first instinct was the right one; too good to be true! It's no wonder that most people are more confused about health and fitness than ever before. In my opinion, it makes no difference if you're an advanced fitness adept, or a beginner, reaching your goals is going to take more than empty promises and false claims. No one should ever follow the fitness advice, or buy health-related products, from anyone who can't prove to me, they've mentally and physically stuck to a healthy nutrition plan long enough, and have exercised with the intensity and dedication it takes to create a strong and beautiful body.
